Enterprise is a city in and the county seat of Wallowa County, Oregon, United States.[3] The population was 1,895 at the 2000 census, with an estimated population of 1,940 in 2007.[4]

History

Enterprise was platted in 1886,[5] and received its name as the result of a vote at a community meeting held in a tent owned by a mercantile company in 1887. The city was incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on February 21, 1889.[6]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2), all land.[7]

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,895 people, 821 households, and 522 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,289.7 people per square mile (497.7/km²). There were 952 housing units at an average density of 647.9 per square mile (250.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.46% White, 0.05% African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 1.06% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.64% of the population.

There were 821 households out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% were non-families. 32.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.80.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $31,429, and the median income for a family was $39,338. Males had a median income of $29,688 versus $22,232 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,755. About 6.7% of families and 11.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.6% of those under age 18 and 7.4% of those age 65 or over.

Economy

Enterprise is home to the Terminal Gravity Brewery and Public House, which produces beer that is distributed statewide.[8] The establishment is a microbrewery and specializes in "live beer" that is distributed cold to maintain freshness.
